Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a biologically-produced compound that is very closely associated with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Both compounds contain sulfur. MSM is common throughout the natural world and trace amounts are even found in the bloodstreams and urine of human beings.
In order to understand MSM we have to start in the ocean. The substance that leads to MSM is manufactured by plankton which then expels it into the air. There, it mixes with ozone and UV rays to create MSM. The MSM is then absorbed into rain and it then falls to the surface of the earth. It can then be absorbed by plants, but it is not known how MSM is taken in through food. You can buy MSM in the form of vitamin supplements.
